Peony Garden
The peony garden of Kongoji Zen Temple in Minami-Ashigara, Japan was founded by the temple's 17th Zen priest, Togen. His dream was to plant 100 peonies on the temple grounds. Over the years he increased the number of peonies and ended up planting about 90 flowers on the temple grounds. However, before his dream became true, he passed away and the project was handed over to the next generation. Unfortunately after his death, the project fell into oblivion and over the years the peony garden grew smaller and smaller. In 2019 the project was resumed by today's Zen priest Issui. And now there are around 50 different varieties and a total of 76 peonies blooming in a small area of the temple garden. The peony garden is open to the public during the flowering period between April and May.

Peony Sponsorship
With a peony sponsorship, you finance the planting of a new variety and its care for the coming years and thus becomes the owner of the respective flower. The peony is planted in the temple and inscribed with the sponsor's name. Choose a new variety from the sponsorship album, which is displayed at the Peony Garden and have it planted under your own name.
